KEEP MOVING AND COLLECT ART

Sophis Gallery is holding Christina H. Kang’s collection exhibit <KEEP MOVING AND
COLLECT ART> from January 6 th (Sat) to 27 th (Sat), 2018. As it can be inferred from the title, ‘Keep moving and collect art’, this exhibit consists of about 70 pieces which are significant results that show Christina Kang’s beliefs in art collecting.

PRIVATE CHOICES

This project sheds light on 11 Brussels collections including works by Belgian and international artists, both confirmed and emerging, in an attempt at showcasing the specificity of each one. Through a selection process carried out hand in hand with the collectors, we discover a facet of their vision of art and life.

PERFORMANCE DIOGO PIMENTÃO THE PART OF CHANCE - 2017 SEASON, LE CYCLOP DE JEAN TINGUELY

What is the part of chance in the creation of a work of art? Some people expect the work to bear witness to the mastery of the artist, this famous ‘technique’ or ‘tekhnè’ (the Greek word for ‘art’). But the vagaries of the artistic gesture or act, and the materials used all have a decisive influence on the creative process. Indeed, they sometimes create a gap between the initial idea and the final product. Some artists even leave a place for chance or the unexpected to play a role in shaping their work.

..."It is possible to say, without taking the discipline of choreography beyond its limits, that there is a conscious training of the fragile body of drawing, by suspending it over the floor or making it lean against the wall and find its own strength. That is why it is not unusual for Diogo Pimentão to start making the work in his studio only to complete it during the exhibition set up. The studio becomes a space for rehearsal whereas the gallery turns into a stage. His material is often paper, a medium whose fate is usually to
symbolically loose its material status to become a surface"...

DIOGO PIMENTÃO « DISJUNCTIVE »
UNTILTHEN

...'This series of little falls creates movement. I am in this same relationship between equilibrium and disequilibrium with paper; I am obliged to listen to where it wants to go. It commands a certain folding, a direction. For this piece like for all the others, the paper thus becomes a permanent object, but it also remains visually soft and malleable with apparent folding, a sensitive shape.’

..."Affirmant une indétermination fondamentale, le travail de Pimentão refuse toute hiérarchie entre le dessin et la sculpture, l’intention et l’improvisation, l’œuvre et ses dérivés ou ses effets... Il s’apparente à un jeu constant sur les points de vue, le langage, les tentatives de définition, qui trouve un point d’orgue dans une étrange « table des périodiques ». ,,,"The Story of a Fold 
In his memoirs of his studies at the Bauhaus, Hannes Beckmann relates an anecdote which reads rather like a parable. One day, Josef Albers strode into the room with a bundle of newspapers under his arm, which he gave out to the students. He said he wanted them to make it into something meaningful while respecting the material and taking into account its particular properties. What he got was a whole range of figurines: boats, animals, aeroplanes - not a very satisfactory jumble of objects. The only exception was a young Hungarian architect who had simply folded the sheet of paper lengthways then rested it on its two edges. Albers explained that this student had fully understood the nature of the material, how "naturally suited the folding process was to paper, because it made such a pliable material stiff […] after the paper had been stood upright, it became visually active on both sides..."
